In responding to the news that students sent to the hospitalVice Chancellor Lap-Chee Tsui pointed out that Hong Kong is not suitable for marathon

During the orientation camp of the dormitory “University Hall” of the University of Hong Kong, three students were sent to hospital due to physical exhaust in the 10 km long run and hiking at night. One of them has to be sent to the Intensive Care Unit. The Vice Chancellor Lap-Chee Tsui described that it was an unfortunate incident, he regarded the environment of Hong Kong may not be suitable for running for a long distance. Students should consider whether it is suitable for organizing the marathon in the following years.

Mr. Tsui attended the ‘orientation day for non-local students’ yesterday and claimed that the poor air quality in Hong Kong in addition to the hot humid weather, caused participants’ discomfort even in the public event, would raise an awareness that the students should organize this kind of activity again. As he said, ‘the safety of the students is mostly concerned by the School; therefore, students should especially take care of their health whenever they join any activities.

900 non-local students accommodate at the school halls

Around 900 non-local students from over 30 countries and districts have been accepted by the University of Hong Kong, for exchange program or 3-year courses. There are some ‘new-comers’ including Mongolia, Morocco, Israel, Albania, Pakistan, Luxemburg. There were about 600 non-local students attending yesterday’s orientation ceremony.

Christina Lim, a student from Singapore, talks of her reason of studying at the University of Hong Kong. ‘Many relatives of mine praise that HKU is so renowned and be called: the Oxford University in Hong Kong.’ Another student from The Netherlands, Johannes Leonardus, heard that HK is a never-sleeping city with intense livelihood and HKU is a famous institution; therefore he comes here for being an exchange student to experience it himself. He also mentioned that it is not likely for him staying here to work, ‘Life is stressful here in HK, I still want to enjoy my life.’

Johannes, a student from The Netherlands, stated that Hong Kong is an international city. Not only can he experience the prosperous Chinese Culture, but also comprehend the living style from the West. The living pace in Hong Kong is very fast. The life in HK is totally different from the Netherlands. He would love to learn the Chinese culture here in HK, widen his horizon.
